No small part of the attraction was the setting itself - vast neoclassical buildings set amid bucolic scenery, reclaimed from bogland and beautifully landscaped.
Despite their size, the buildings were designed to be disassembled and removed after the fair’s closure, leaving little evidence of its grandeur for future generations. But now, for the first time in 124 years, - all thanks to ’s meticulous recreation. The project took a little over a fortnight (quite a startling contrast to the epic undertaking of constructing the actual fair), and, remarkably, is almost entirely CaptainCreeper’s work alone. “I had some help on the Statue of the Republic by a builder named Schlumpfii,” he says. The idea came to him while reading The Devil in the White City - Erik Larson’s riveting account of the fair’s troubled construction and other, more grisly, events of the time. “I Googled some images of the fair and buildings made for it and found them to be gorgeous,” says CaptainCreeper. “To actually recreate the buildings I started with the general layout of windows, doors and details of the building and worked my way up.
As great as Google is for showing buildings, I had trouble finding enough pictures of all the buildings. To address this problem I found a map in the back of a book showing the entire fair. This allowed me to see the buildings' shape and the general layout of the fair from an aerial view. Outside of this I watched a few videos of 3D recreations made in a modeling software. 'I also did some extra research on the architects behind the fair - the landscape architect Frederick Law Omsted and the mastermind behind the fair Daniel Burnham. Daniel Burnham soon became my favorite architect after looking at some of his other work outside of the fair like the Flatiron building, the Chicago Union station, and the Rookery building.” Surprisingly, at the time of the fair’s conception, the chosen style was thought to be a little quaint by some of the more fashionable New York architects - though we can put this down to a certain amount of professional rivalry. With the benefit of hindsight, the buildings are stunning architecrual feats.
“Personally, I've always loved the style and have created a few neoclassical buildings in the past,” says CaptainCreeper. “I can see why the style would be called quaint, what with its influences from Greece and Roman architecture, but to me it’s a great combination.
I imagine the height of structures with all that detail would be enough to leave people in awe. I most enjoyed all the small statues that can be seen in the structures of the fair and many other neoclassical buildings - it’s amazing how much they added to the overall building while being so small.” Reconstructing the buildings also gave CaptainCreeper an understanding of just how ambitious a project it was to build on this scale - something that is not as easily conveyed in descriptions of photos of the fair. “It's amazing how the fair came to be in such a short period of time on a very tight schedule!” he says. And not only was the fair’s construction a project of unprecedented ambition - it was beset by catastrophe throughout: smashed apart by several storms, set on fire, plagued by labour disputes and the untimely death of some of the project’s leaders.
It’s doubly amazing that it ever got built. “Other than gaining insight into the size and ambitious nature of the Fair, I learned about some of the difficulties or where there was potential to be an issue,” says CaptainCreeper. “Although there were no storms or fires destroying anything, I did see the challenge in making the dome on the Administration Building and the roof on a building as massive as the Liberal Arts Building.” Today, you can still visit the Fair’s Palace of Fine Arts, now converted into Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, but to get a sense of the full scale and beauty of the World’s Columbian Exposition - probably one of the greatest wonders of engineering and architecture the world has ever seen - your best bet is to visit CaptainCreeper’s build. My friend has a Mac is now learning Excel. She has toolbars Standard and checked. The formula bar is missing from up in the menu of the toolbar.
What is the keyboard shortcut or menu icon that allows me to see the formulas for a worksheet instead of the values in the cells for a worksheet for Excel for Mac 2008. I have spent 20 minutes on google, macRumors, and Mactopia and can not find the answer. Perhaps this feature does not exist for the mac version. I am using Excel 2008 for Mac (I am also trying to work using the newest version of Excel on my computer, but it keeps crashing). When I open the spreadsheet that I need to work from, some of the cells seem to contain too many characters, and are converted to '#' symbols: The data in the cell is supposed to be text with snippets of code (the% symbol appears as well as @ symbols). I tried expanding the size of the cells, but it didn't change anything. I cannot find much help online about this version of Excel, but following, I decided to ask it here. Excel can store about 32,000 text characters in a cell, but it can only display up to 255 characters if the cell is formatted as text.
If the cell contains more than 255 characters and the cell is formatted as text, then the hash marks are . The solution is to change the format of the cell to general; then the text will display as you expect. You should also note that you might see hash marks appear if you change the size of the font used in a cell.
Change the font to a larger size, and Excel may not be able to display the value horizontally. If you can't widen the column then consider making the font smaller so that Excel can make the full value visible.

You shouldn't be running OS X (Server or client) for public-facing services any older than 10.11.x - period. There are patches for 10.12 probably not provided for 10.11, and far moreso for 10.10 for which security updates are tapering off. This is the LONG-established pattern. Looks like with 10.12, the oldest Server(.app) version you can run is 5.1.7 If you never purchased a Server.app version, then you'll have to contact Apple most likely. Looks like the newest OS X you can run on an Xserver is 10.10 with plenty of caveats. See But then you can run Server 5.2 which you DO want to do.

I was just hoping to re-purpose these 3 x-serves that are still great systems. I may just go with a different solution alltogether. Its good to know I can contact Apple to get the older version. I am having a really hard time considering migrating to a mac mini or mac pro server solution with todays hardware. I may look at Ubuntu server.

The install option means you're already purchased Server.app and don't need to do so again. In my experience it has also 'just worked' to get the old Server.app downloaded on an older OS. Thanks for looking that up. I don't have any Xserves that I work with any longer (and haven't had any in a very long time) and I would never advise keeping any running in ANYthing approaching any critical role(s). Apple's decision is what it is, we can talk about it ad nauseum but our talk won't change a thing about the reality:-) Given that anything past 10.11 isn't officially supported, I'd also advise against pursuing that for ANYthing but a home lab with nothing to lose but (lots of) time.

David's point is simply that it is old, outdated hardware with no spare parts availability. If one goes down you're going to have a problem unless you've planned for it. In my case while they are in use for production purposes they aren't doing anything I can't move to a different server pretty quickly.
So while I do risk a small amount of downtime I don't risk any data loss. For example I'm running my Munki server, MAU caching/manifest server, macOS Server caching service, etc. Off an Xserve. If these services go down it won't really impact the business as the users most likely won't even notice. I can move all those resources to another machine and change internal DNS before anyone even notices. So you're taking a risk by using hardware that old, but it is up to you to calculate that risk and decide if it is worth taking.
If you haven't thought it through and planned it out very carefully the best advice is to don't risk it and use hardware that is still supported. I talked with Apple Enterprise support today. Here is the procedure to buy & obtain an older macOS Server. HAVE A BACKUP or three. Time Machine or SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. OBTAIN THE MAC OS INSTALLER (IF NEEDED) If you need an older OS X installer - You're going to need an Apple ID that has previously downloaded that OS.
(This is a great reason to visit the Mac App store & 'buy' every OS, even if you don't need them right away. They are free). Using that Apple ID, Login to the App store & download the OSX installer.
This is not the server, just the regular OS. BUYING THE SERVER INSTALLER: You need a Mac running Sierra. You can install Sierra on an external drive & boot from that if you want to. Using a Mac running Sierra, go to the Mac App store & purchase the current version of macOS Server. Discard the file because you don't want that new version.
But your apple ID now owns that software & can download it. You are now done with the Sierra Mac. OBTAINING THE OLDER VERSION OF macOS SERVER Using the older Mac that you want to install macOS Server onto, sign into the Mac App store - using the same Apple ID that bought macOS Server.
